Woman Seeking Man Personals
Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

You’ve exhausted the entire roster of single men your friends know, as well as all the single men your brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles know. You have a good job, have several close friends, are in good shape, and try to maintain a dating personals emotional even keel. You want to meet a guy who is fun and wants to be in a long-term relationship, like most of the single women you know.

You paid to become a member of an online dating service. You posted your photo and your profile, and you’re receiving a stream of dating offers, especially since you’re considered the new meat on the website. The rest of the women who have been on the site for longer than six months are considered tired, old meat.

While this language seems strong, it’s not my language, but that’s what I hear from women, repeatedly, about online dating. They also tell me that men like mature dating frequently lie about their age and financial strength, and most confusing of all, post old, outdated photos.

I have a friend who made a date for coffee with a fellow she met online. She told me she liked his photo and his profile as well, and since she’s a therapist, thought there was something vaguely familiar about him. She showed up at the café on time and sat reading her newspaper, when her date showed up and stood over her, casting a large shadow over both her and her New York Times.
